“Fishermen Welcome FG Marine Policy Document
”
The Federation of Irish Fishermen welcomes the publication today of Fine Gael's Marine policy document. The document demonstrates a detailed knowledge and understanding of the broad range of issues facing the marine and particularly the fishing sector and as such deserves detailed scrutiny by voters in coastal constituencies. The document takes a supportive approach which recognises the need for restructuring but also that the sector can, with correct support, have a profitable and sustainable future. FIF particularly welcomes the FG committment to the restoration of a senior cabinet position with responsibility for the marine.
We note that Fine Gael held a marine conference in Galway earlier this year and that both Enda Kenny and Marine Spokesman John Perry engaged in an extensive round of port visits and consultation pursuant to the preparation of their document.
This document commits Fine Gael to a clearly defined set of policies if the party were to be in government following the next election. We look forward to the publication of their policies by other political parties which will allow voters to compare the approaches taken by each, as well as looking forward to the publication of the Indepedent Strategy Review Group under Dr. Noel Cawley.
FIF will seek to meet Fine Gael leader Enda Kenny and Marine Spokesman John Perry, to discuss the FG policy document and to deliver an industry assessment of current issues.
