Roaring Water Bay Special Area of Conservation (SAC)
In late 2010 a public meeting was held in Skibbereen on the designation of Roaringwater Bay as an SAC and
the requirments for fisheries and fishing vessels operating within its confines or designated limits.
The meeting was Chaired by BIM and the Marine Institute and the IS&WFPO attended on behalf of its Membership.
The main focus of the meeting was to outline the agreed plan for managing fisheries within the Roaring Water
Bay area and to determine the current level of acitivities and profile the various fisheries within the SAC.
This approach will also apply to other SAC’s designated in Irish Waters. To this end, it was agreed that a ‘Questionnaire’
would be circulated to all interested parties, to complete and return to BIM/Marine Institute. After this exercise is
completed a further public meeting will be held to outline the findings and next steps in the process. This
Questionnarie accompanies this months Newsletter and is also available on our Website, for our Membership that
conducts activities in the area to complete and return to IS&WFPO Offices. We would advise all members that operate
in this area to engage with this process without delay. More information on the process and support with the completion
of the Questionnaire is available from IS&WFPO Offices.

Marine Protected Areas (MPAs) in UK Waters
The Marine Strategy Framework Directive (2008/56/EC) requires Member States to put measures in place to achieve or maintain good environmental status in
their waters by 2020. Under the Directive a coherent and representative network of Marine Protected Areas (MPAs) has to be created by 2016. The UK has
initiated the Marine Conservation Zone Project to begin the process of establishing MPAs around their coastline, two of which impact the Irish Fleet: the
Finding Sanctuary (the SW UK area waters) and the Irish Sea. The UK MCZ Project has expressly stated it is committed to working with “people who use the sea
for their livelihood” and to this end IS&WFPO has been invited to become a stakeholder in these groups. We are encouraging all IS&W members to
visit the mapping web site ( mczmapping.org) to get more information and enter areas of these regions that they utilise. In addition, please feel free to
contact this office with any questions regarding this issue and the future of the fishery in these UK waters.

In addition, The Irish Sea Conservation Zone, one of the two conservation zone projects established by the UK, has released a progress report outlining tentative
areas which will be assessed as MPAs. Follow the link below to review the most recent update of the ISCZ Project.
